So many people these days want to know how to obtain a government grant. A government grant is money that can be used by an individual or a business and the best part is it never has to be repaid. While free money is good and everyone wants to get their hands on some, the notion that the government will just hand you a lump sum of money to do with as you please is absurd. Government grants typically go to businesses and whoever does receive them has to perform a certain task or goal with the money they receive. But if you do have a business and you want to do some greater good then you should by all means check into getting a government grant.

The process of obtaining a government grant is not that dissimilar to obtaining a loan. There are certain qualifications that need to be met, paperwork to be filled out, and time that needs to pass in order to tell you if you are approved or not. One of the best places to not only search for government grants, but to apply for them as well is Grants.gov were you can find out a multitude of information about government grants. Here’s what you do:

• Register: Before you can use the website to its fullest potential you have to register with them. Fill out all the information they are asking you for and then wait. The registration process is sometimes fast but can take up to a couple of
weeks to be completed so you will have to exercise your patience here.

• Look for grants: Once your registration is complete you will be able to search the website thoroughly to see if there are any grants that you may qualify for. Little tip here; don’t waste your time with grants that you know you won’t qualify for. If you see a grant that is given out to help find a cure for sea turtle’s shell disease and your company sells cell phones, don’t bother, you will only be wasting your time and the government’s time as well.

• Apply: If you do find a grant that you wish to try to obtain you can request a grant application package from the website. Once you receive it, fill it out completely and make sure that you leave nothing blank. Once completed send the package back where instructed.

• Track progress: On Grants.gov there is a place where you can actually go and track the progress of your application. The process may take a great deal of time but at least with the tracking option you will have some idea as to where you stand.

Most importantly, if you do obtain a government grant use it for its intended purpose. The government will not smile on your buying yourself a new car or a dream vacation with their money that wasn’t intended to do so. If you are caught by the government using the funds in the wrong manner you could be subject to paying it all back….with some nice penalties on top of it all.
